Niloufer Hospital for Women & Children was conceived with the generosity of Princess Niloufer, is the only Premier Institute of Child Health functioning under the aegis of Government of Andhra Pradesh with the motto “To care for the Child from intrauterine life to Childhood”. Senior faculty of the Osmania Medical College man this institution. Training is imparted to Post Graduates in all the existing specialities of the Hospital apart from the under graduate medical education. Super Speciality training is given in Paediatric Surgery.

The Paediatric Surgery Department was started in 1958 in Andhra Pradesh. A separate Surgical Unit for Children was created in the Institute of Child Health & Niloufer Hospital/Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad. 1958 is the land mark year in the evolution of Paediatric Surgery in Andhra Pradesh particularly Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad. This unit was created with a bed strength of 25 beds.

The Second Paediatric Surgical Unit (Third in the state) was started in 1971 in Niloufer Hospital, Osmania Medical College. The bed strength of the Department was raised to 50. In 1994, third surgical unit was started in Niloufer Hospital/Osmania Hospital, Hyderabad. The bed strength of the Department was raised to 90.

In 2009, 52 years after its incetion Paediatric Surgical Department in Niloufer Hospital is a full fledged Department with 3 Surgical Units with 3 Professors, 9 Asst. Professors and 1 Senior Registrar with a bed strength of 100 under the Supervision of Dr. A. Narendra Kumar, Professor & H.O.D. The Department is having an exclusive Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care Unit which can accommodate 30 Neonates. It is also having 16 Bed exclusive Post-operative care unit. An exclusive Arogyasree Ward for catering to the patients coming under Arogyasree scheme is also existing in the Hospital is one of the premier Pediatric Surgical Department in the country with turn endo-surgical advantages to the Pediatric population. The Department is performing 100 Surgical procedures per month under the Government of Andhra Pradesh's Prestigious Rajiv Arogyasree Health Scheme.

M.Ch. Paediatric Surgical courses were started in 1977 at Niloufer Hospital/OMC, Hyderabad. Each year two students are being admitted. Besides this, General Surgical and Paediatric Post Graduates are posted for their training. The Department is engaged in undergraduate, Postgraduate and Super specialty teaching programme, till now 39 Paediatric Surgeons were qualified from Niloufer Children's Hospital.

Work Pattern: The Out Patient department will be run 2 hours per day, for six days in a week with a turn over of 80 to 100 out patients per day.

The surgical theatres will work for six theater days in a week with annual turn over of 3000 cases. Emergency surgeries will be taken up as and when they come. A seperate theater complex came into existence on 17^th December, 2001. This complex have 4 operation theatres with a separate provision for taking up emergency services. One theatre is meant exclusively for Pediatric Endoscopic procedures.

A variety of Surgical lesions – Congenital (by birth defects) Traumatic, Infections & Inflammations, Malignant (Cancerous) Lesions were dealt with regularly by Department of Pediatric Surgery, Niloufer Hospital.

Babies born with absense of Normal anal Orifice (Ano-Rectal anomalies) and Congenital Megacolon cases were referred from all over the state and also from Border Districts of neighbouring states like Karnataka, Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh & Orissa to Niloufer Hospital for reconstructive Surgeries.
