Blood Bank
  • The blood bank in the Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad is established in the year 1997. Existing blood bank is managed by an Asst. Prof. Of Microbiology trained in blood banking as incharge.

  • The blood bank is licensed to procure screen and dispense whole blood. There is a provision to store whole blood, blood components (PRP, FFP, and Packed Cells) procured from other licensed blood banks for patients who need them.

  • The blood bank function round the clock with staff – pattern comprising of one incharge blood bank medical officer, three staff nurses, one regular and three contract lab-technicians, one counselor, one lab attender and a sweeper.

  • Blood grouping and typing is done for 70-80 cases per day including out patients by slide and tube agglutination methods.

  • Cross matching is done for 10-15 cases and blood units are dispense for elective as well as emergency cases.

  • Direct and indirect coombs test is done to establish or screen for RH -ve incompatibility.

  • Blood donors are motivated. Blood donation camps are conducted periodically for procurement of blood. 30% of blood units are procured from ITMR blood bank and LIONS club blood bank, Koti whenever they conduct blood donation camps.

  • Blood units are screened for HIV, HbsAG, and HCV by Elisa method. VDRL test is done to evaluate for syphilis and direct smear examination for Malarial Parasite.

  • Emergency HIV and HbsAg tests are done in the blood bank for un booked antenatal cases.

  • There is an existing continuous power supply for blood storage refrigerators to maintain cold chain.

  • Calibration of all the equipments in the blood bank is done every six months by an authrozed process controllers and instrumentation engineers.

  • There is a need to upgrade the existing blood bank by enhancing the ancillary staff and two blood bank medical officers with a master in transfusion medicine.
